1 Out of 5 U.S. Adults Doesn’t Use the Internet

Internet has turned into an important instrument for finding jobs, having an education, accessing services, source of the news, keeping in touch with your relatives and people you know, etc.,but 1 in 5 U.S. adults still doesn’t utilize the Internet, in any way, based on a new research done by Pew.

They are just not interested – as what the research found out — not in social networks, IM’s, email, the web, or any other online services.

“Among current non-internet users, almost half (48%) say the main reason they don’t go online now is because they don’t think the internet is relevant to them — often saying they don’t want to use the internet and don’t need to use it to get the information they want or conduct the communication they want,” according to the latest report.

Other common reasons include not having a computer as it is too expensive for them, it is a waste of time, too difficult or they don’t know how to use it.

Those who don’t use the internet currently have never used the internet before, or no one else in their family used it. 10% of the respondents said they might use the internet in the future for email use and over 20% of the respondents claimed that they know enough about the technology to start using the computer and internet whenever they wanted to.

Other factors concerning the study:

  • Pew also cited other factors like household income. Families with under $20,000 annual income mostly don’t use the internet.
  • In terms of age, 59% of seniors in the US don’t go online or don’t use the internet.
  • For the educational attainment, about 60% of adults that did not complete high school don’t use the internet and most of them are poor.
  • Disabled people are also more likely to not use the internet. Only 54% of them use the internet.

Having internet accessibility at home is probably the best way to use the internet– and the research firm discovered that currently 40% of U.S. adults do not have internet at home.
