China’s Efforts in Cleaning Up Oil Spill

A clean-up is initiated by China and other environmental observers, Thursday, because of the country’s largest oil spill. The said clean-up is now progressing, but the environmental and economic disaster that it has brought is very evident.

The clean-up carried on over a 430 square kilometer stretch from the Yellow Sea pushing off up to the northeastern part of Dalian city. China’s major ports and strategic reserve sites are found in this city. In the said clean-up, one of the workers who helped in cleaning up the oil spill drowned and died.

The company, China National Petroleum Corporation, stated that the explosion of the pipeline caused decrease in oil shipments. The company also announced that it already had resumed its operations. The reason of the pipeline’s explosion is still not clear until now.

According to Greenpeace China, an environmental group, oil industry is not the only business affected by the oil spill. It also has affected the rate of seafood farming and tourism industries, especially in Dalian city which was close to said incident.

China’s government, especially, is most concerned with the effects of the oil spill to the health of the people, specifically to those who are living near the area of the incident.
