After one year of Ed Thomas’ murder, Thomas’ family has finally forgiven his killer. Ed Thomas was killed in his team’s locker room at Aplington-Parkersburg High School in Parkersburg, Iowa, where he was the coach of the football team. It was told that he was shot and killed by his player, Mark Becker, on June 2009.
Despite this tragedy, Thomas’ family showed that they can forgive considering such heinous act. It took them a year to gather up all their strength and courage to forgive Thomas’ killer. With this Ed Thomas’ family was awarded with the exalted Arthur Ashe Courage Award on July 14, 2010. This award is given to people to celebrate their legacy in the sports field. Some of the awardees of this were Nelson Mandela, Pat Tillman and Muhammad Ali. During this significant event, Thomas’ sons and wife attended the ceremony and received the prestigious award being given to Ed Thomas. Thomas’ son said that they couldn’t get through this tragedy if it weren’t for their faith that they will get justice.
