IBM Connects to Other Universities

The prominent Watson computing system, IBM will be making history as it fights in a special version of quiz show Jeopardy! between previous champions Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. The momentous man-machine match to be aired February 14-16 will show the stride completed in the development of the question answering (QA) technology that forms the backbone of the Watson computing system.

The name of eight universities who have been working together with IBM Researchers to advance the particular technology was announced presently by IBM.  The following are:  Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Texas at Austin, University of Southern California (USC), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), University at Albany (UAlbany), University of Trento (Italy), University of Massachusetts Amherst and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).

Researchers in these establishments are running with IBM on the improvement of a trial product open architecture that allows them to competently work together on advancing causal QA capabilities and after that apply them to the Watson Computing system. The QA technology utilizes burst through analytics to know what is being asked, study huge amounts of information, and give the most excellent reply based on the proof it discovers.

Professor Eric Nyberg of Carnegie Mellon, which established the Open advancement of Question-Answering initiative (QAQA) with IBM in 2008 said,  “Applying QA technology to the real-time Jeopardy! trouble is an significant challenge for the field for the reason that it needs a scheme to react more rapidly and with a level of self-assurance that has not been probable to-date.”

Indicating that the plan of a computer giving exact, precise and reliable answers to a inquiry inquired by a human has fired thoughts since the start of the computer age, he said that it was OAQA that is changing this science fiction into actuality and in such an advanced form.  “Jeopardy! Needs kind of way of thinking that are fairly complicated, utilizing metaphors, puns, and puzzles that exceed necessary sympathetic of the language. As a confront trouble, Jeopardy! will make bigger the state of the art.”

“The accomplishment of the Jeopardy! challenge will break barriers linked with the ability of computing technology to process and recognize human language, and will have deep outcomes on science, technology and business.”

IBM has avowed that the continuing research teamworks with the universities will assist go forward Watson’s capability to change the method businesses and society work and get better all kinds of industries, for instance healthcare, banking, government, etc.
