LG Halts Production of Windows Phone to Focus on Android Phones

LG Electronics, one of the smartphone makers, has ceased its operation of producing Windows Phone Units for now and will focus more on phones running on Android, based on the reports.

Reported by Korea Herald on Monday, the South-Korea based company will back off from producing phones on Windows platform but still have plans to continue the studies and developments on the Microsoft OS, did not indicate though if this is because of the increasing demand on Android based phones or not.

Optimus 7, as well as other handsets are based on Windows Phone 7.

LG has mentioned that phones on Windows platform hold lower than 2% of the worldwide market in smartphones, based on several market experts.

According to an LG spokesman, the market on Windows Phone is not good and the total units sold globally is not meaningful.

LG made a decision three years ago that they will make Windows Phone as their primary OS for the smartphones, together with the upcoming 26 more new units of Windows Phones this year.

LG’s decision to halt the production of Windows Phones temporarily is probably not a reverse of the company’s strategy, according to Ken Dulaney, an analyst from Gartner.

According to his theories, the company could possibly be expecting Windows Phone 8 to appear late in 2012 before they start on making more units on the WP platform.

It’s actually a wise decision according to him, “Rather than putting out another Windows Phone and see it struggle, they are wise to wait for Windows Phone 8.”

  1. Thanks for the info! I just hope before 2012 ends LG will be able to continue their production.
