The federal government announced that they will be tightening the sanctions against Iran. This is due to the report that Iran is taking its steps in building nuclear weapons “in continued defiance of international resolutions.”
The said sanctions were discussed and agreed by the Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon in coordination with other countries. The sanctions’ purpose is to “send a strong signal to Iran: the international community is united in purpose and commitment.”
In a press conference, Cannon stated that there cannot be a “state that can threaten international peace and security without consequence.”
This announcement came after when Canada constricted Iran for earlier sanctions. This step of the federal government may have some impact with regard to the economic relationship between Canada and Tehran; especially that Canada has its largest wheat export to Iran. Furthermore, the government reminded the public that the sanctions were made not for the Iranian people but to its government.
