Sharp to Start Making LCD Panels for iPhone 5S; Next-Gen iPhone will have Fingerprint Sensor

Sharp Corporation was reported to start the production of the LCD panels to be used for the new iPhone 5S coming out in the third quarter, according to a report from Nikkan Kogyo Shinbun of Japan.

The LCD manufacturer will use their Kameyama Plant No. 1 for the production of these panels. This plant has the capacity to produce more or less 600 million units per month but it has never been used in its full capacity due to the decline in business of Sharp.

Slow flow of cash has been a big concern of the Japan-based company. This pushed them to take investments from other suppliers Samsung Electronics and Foxconn. Samsung is the biggest stakeholder of Sharp Corporation.

Sharp is not the sole company to manufacture the LCD displays, Japan Display – a combined division of LG, Hitachi, Toshiba and Sony also received orders from Apple Inc. LG Display is currently the biggest LCD manufacturer in the world based in Seoul, South Korea.

There are no physical changes of the LCD panels for the iPhone 5S, it will just be identical with the earlier iPhone 5. The next generation iPhone will feature a fingerprint sensor, will run on iOS 7, and a much faster A7 processor.

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, there could possibly be delays with the iPhone 5S release due to the development of the fingerprint sensors and the reportedly delayed development of the iOS 7.

iPhone 5 vs Galaxy S4

iPhone 5 vs Galaxy S4 According to Analysts

As Samsung finally released their Galaxy S4, Apple’s iPhone 5 sales is not affected in the market. According to analysts, Galaxy S4 is not as refined as iPhone 5.

Brian White, Topeka Capital Markets analyst, have said Samsung crushing Apple in the phone market is a complete nonsense. During the stock downdrafts, there are analysts that said Samsung is “out-innovating” Apple.

White said that the Galaxy S4 smartphone doesn’t have some good edges or atleast some good points to make it a much better phone than the Apple’s iPhone 5. In terms of size, White pointed out that iPhone 5 is 20% lighter and 18% slimmer than iPhone 4s but S4 is only 2% lighter and 8% slimmer than its predecessor, S3. He also said that the S4, aside from being clunkier, it is more awkward.

In terms of materials, Brian White emphasized that iPhone 5 is made up of aluminum uni-body casing while Samsung Galaxy S4 is only made of what he said, cheap plastic.

Gene Munster, an analyst of Piper Jaffray said that iPhone 5 will still be the smartphone leader in 2013.

With what Brian White said that S4 doesn’t have nice edges than iPhone 5, other analyst said that the Super AMOLED display with 441 ppi of Samsungs’ is pretty impressive. It is much higher compared to Apples’.

iPhone 5 vs Galaxy S4

Whether if it’s true or not, some have predicted and expected that there will be an iPhone 5s and will come most likely in summer or fall.

With the Galaxy S4’s recent release, maybe it is too early to compare the two smartphones in terms of sales. Only time will tell what phone will take the lead.
